Why Social Media?

What exactly is social media anyway?
Well, according to Wickipedia, social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.
To a group of communications students who in the next decade will be playing a huge role in how media is used most effectively social media carries great weight. Social mediums like Facebook and Twitter are taking over highly marketed generations. If we want to reach this audience, we must use the most accessed means. Agree?
This goes further than targeting consumers. As college students, social media is affecting our future employment. What we post online can and will be used in evaluating our character for a job. This was not the case in generations past.
At the same time, we have the opportunities opened by social media to pursue and be pursued online. For example, LinkedIn, which is used by 80% of companies as their primary employment tool.
This is scratching the surface...how else will social media affect our particular
group?
